January 25, 2020 : Six-time world champion boxer MC Mary Kom has been awarded the prestigious Padma Vibhushan. While World Champion shuttler PV Sindhu has been conferred the Padma Bhushan on Saturday.
The Manipuri boxer, who was conferred with the Padma Bhushan in 2013 and Padma Shri in 2006, is only the fourth sportsperson in the country to be conferred with Padma Vibhushan after chess wizard Viswanathan Anand, mountaineer Edmund Hillary and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar who all got the coveted award in 2008.
Mary Kom is one of seven eminent personalities to be awarded the Padma Vibhushan this year.
PV Sindhu is among the 16 persons named for the Padma Bhushan. She is a silver medallist at the 2016 Rio Olympics and is also the only Indian world champion in badminton. Sindhu has also won four other World Championships medals – 2 silver and 2 bronze – besides the gold, she won last year.
The government announced the final list of names for Padma Awards 2020 on Saturday.
The other six sportspersons were named for Padma Shri. They are cricketer Zaheer Khan, current Indian women’s hockey captain Rani Rampal, shooter Jitu Rai, former Indian men’s hockey player M P Ganesh, former Indian women’s football team captain Oinam Bembem Devi and archer Tarundeep Rai.
